Spot News - A picture of an unscheduled event for which no advance
planning was possible taken in the course of daily coverage. Examples:
fires, accidents and localized natural disasters.
2.
General News - A picture of a scheduled political, social or cultural
event for which advance planning was possible. Examples: demonstrations,
staged entertainment and promotional events.
3.
Science/Natural History - A photograph that increases understanding
and appreciation for science and the natural world.
4.
Product Illustration - A photograph illustrating a consumable product
such as clothing and accessories, food, appliances or automobiles.
Titles for each entry are required.

the dignity of the subject is important.

not practice or informal play. Emphasis is on athletics and the commitment
it takes to compete.
12.
Sports Feature - An unposed sports-related photo that celebrates the
role athletics play in the lives of amateur and/or professional athletes
and fans.
13.
Portrait/Personality - A picture of a person that reveals the essence
of the subject's character.
14.
Pictorial - A graphic image that expresses beauty, tension and other
abstract concepts through composition and tonal and color relationships
more than through human interaction.
Multiple
Picture Categories:

primarily for newspapers and wire services. Submissions should have
a clearly defined structure through which each image contributes something
different. Literal, chronological stories and thematic essays are
both acceptable; logical organization, however, is essential. Edit
tightly. Eliminate weak and redundant images. Write succinct, descriptive
titles. In the past, many otherwise fine entries have been rejected
due to weak editing.)
15.

one story. All must be taken (but not necessarily published) within
seven consecutive days. Indicate on the caption sheet the date each
photograph was taken.
Newspaper
Photographer of the Year Portfolio:
A
portfolio may contain no more than 20 entries, totaling no more than
80 slides. Each single photo, picture story, Sports Portfolio and
One Week's Work submission counts as a single entry.
A
newspaper portfolio should be diverse and must include submissions
from at least four single picture categories (categories 1-3, 7-14)
and at least two multiple picture categories (categories 4-6, 15-19).
Enter
the portfolio in a Kodak Carousel Transvue 80 slide tray.
Arrange
slides in the tray with the singles first followed by the picture
stories.
Enter
a duplicate set of portfolio slides in 8-1/2 x 11 clear plastic archival
slide sleeves positioned horizontally.
Label
your duplicate slides as shown in the accompanying illustration on
page 6. Include your last name, title, category number and capital
letter(s) that matches an identical capital letter on the respective
caption. Place all information on the emulsion side of the mount.
Portfolios
will not be broken down for judging in individual categories. If you
wish to enter work from your portfolio into a single or multiple picture
category, you must provide a separate entry.

Editing
Philosophy:
Photo
editing should demonstrate a sensitivity for the selection and organization
of documentary photojournalism and the appropriate use of photo illustrations.
Page design should reflect consideration for the reader and respect
for the vision of the photographer.
Judges
will consider the effectiveness of the captions, headlines and other
display typography as well as photo content. Aggressive local coverage
and imaginative editing of wire and syndicated photos are important.
Layout of inside pages and section fronts will be evaluated.
Newspaper

Dailies:
Submit, in one envelope, three complete newspapers, only one of which
may be a Sunday issue. Two of the three must be from the same week,
chosen from one of the following:
Feb.
8 - 14; Mar. 8 - 14; May 24 - 30; June 14 - 20; July 26 - Aug. 1;
Aug. 2 - 8; Oct. 11 - Oct. 17; Nov. 22 - 28. The third issue may be
from any date of your choice.
Weeklies
or Semi-Weeklies: In one envelope, submit two consecutive issues beginning
with the issue published in one of the above weeks, plus a third issue
of your choice.
44.
Magazines - Submit two consecutive issues published during the year
1998 plus the magazine from the week of Feb. 8, 1998 or the month
of May for monthlies. Magazines may submit only one entry to this
category. Attach labels to the back of each issue.
45.
Books - Entries must rely primarily on documentary photography and
have been published sometime within the last three years (1996, 1997
or 1998.) Photographs may be the work of one or more photographers.
Submit one copy. If you would like your entry to become part of the
Missouri School of Journalism's library please initial the box on
the entry form.
46.
Interactive Publication - An interactive, multimedia editorial report
published on CD-ROM or Internet web site. Single stories and essays
are eligible, as are complex packages that deal with a single topic
or theme. Portfolios, business home pages and catalogues are not eligible.
Content - images, sound, writing, news value - overall organization,
clarity of focus and ease of use will be the guiding criteria.
Four copies of the CD must be included with your entry. Tape an editing
category label to outside of each CD's jewel case. Entries will not
be returned. Judges will evaluate the actual web site and copies recorded
on disk. Include the web site URL and one copy of the complete web
site recorded onto CD-ROM, ZIP, JAZ or floppy disk. Mac-compatible
or cross-platform disks are preferred.
Angus
McDougall Award
Angus
McDougall Overall Excellence in Editing Award: No special entry is
required. Judges will select one newspaper that demonstrates consistent
excellence in photo use in a variety of categories throughout the
editing division.
Community
Awareness Award
This
award shall be given annually to a body of work that demonstrates
an unusual understanding of and appreciation for everyday life. Entries
must have been produced entirely within the photographer's home community.
Its purpose is to encourage greater attention to the small events
in life, which often are overshadowed by the news of the day, and
to celebrate those photographs that remind us that the world turns
mostly on the labor and dreams of the common woman and man.
All
work must have been taken or published for the first time between
January 1, 1998 and December 31, 1998.
Submit
a maximum of 40 slides in a Kodak Carousel Transvue 80 tray. Submit
a duplicate set of slides in 8 1/2 x 11 clear plastic archival slide
sleeves. Orient the slides so that they read correctly when the slide
sleeve is positioned horizontally.
The
entry may contain individual photographs and/or stories and essays.
Label
each duplicate slide with your name, picture title and a capital letter
that matches an identical capital letter on the respective caption
sheet. Write "CAA" in the upper right hand corner of each
slide mount. Place all information on the emulsion side of the mount.
Caption
sheets must accompany the slides; only one set is necessary. Summarize
the entry in a single paragraph on the back of the first page of your
caption sheets. Additional materials (tear sheets, books) will be
disregarded.
Canon
Photo Essay
The
Canon Photo Essay Award honors outstanding photo essays, one of the
most challenging assignments for the photojournalist. Entries should
examine a subject in depth following a clearly developed theme. Photographs
should exhibit a distinctive style and expert technique.
There
are no subject matter requirements or limits.
Photos
need not have been taken during 1998.
Entries
need not have been published.
Photo
essays or parts thereof entered in previous years may not be resubmitted.
Submit

Kodak
Crystal Eagle
The
Kodak Crystal Eagle Award for Impact in Photojournalism is given to
a photojournalist whose work has had an acknowledged impact on society.
The award shall recognize one who, by photographically exploring and
reporting a subject of significant social concern, has changed the
way people live or the things they believe.
Entries
are not restricted to any particular time period.
A
letter of nomination that outlines in detail the effects that have
resulted from publication of the photographs must be included. Nominations
may be made by the photographer or by others on his or her behalf.
Submit
