"The Old German Baptists"

1 of 10

Dewayne Burns rides in his father's buggy as another buggy passes them on their way to church in the countryside of western Ohio. The Burns family belongs to the old order of the Old German Baptist Brethren and do not use electricity or cars.

Not Amish, not Mennonite, the community of Old German Baptist Brethren in western Ohio may look similar at first glance, but their identity takes root from the Pietist movement in Europe in the early 17th century. Today, the largest concentration of Old German Baptists live in the Ohio flatlands. They favor a strict interpretation of the Bible, shunning modern adornments and believe in full-immersion baptism. They are a group that has vowed 'to take nothing of the world.'
