"The New Europe"

1 of 10

Hungarian national park. One of the biggest organic farms in all of Europe. Shephards ride their horses.

On the first of May, 2004, the face of Europe changed considerably. Ten new countries were added to the European Union. From one day to the next, the definition of what it meant to be European had to be rewritten. New worlds, new ethnic groups and new languages are mixing with old Europe. But instead of unifying into a Europe, it may be polarizing the continent. The new countries bring with them a set of social issues such as poverty, inadequate healthcare and no social security for many of their citizens. Some new Europeans, like the Roma, lack even the right to vote.
