"Deadly Derecho" A monstrous derecho with winds exceeding 100 miles per hour roars over a golden wheat field as it strikes central Kansas on July 3, 2005. A derecho, pronounced day-RAY-cho, comes from the Spanish word meaning 'straight ahead' and is created by a violent, often tornadic, squall-line thunderstorm. This derecho killed one person within an hour of this image and resulted in more than a million dollars in damage.
