"GUATEMALA GANGS"

1 of 11

A dead inmate is seen at the local morgue after a prison riot caused by a fight between rival gangs in Escuintla, Guatemala, 56 kms. (34 miles) south of Guatemala City. Gangs that trace their roots back to the hard streets of U.S. cities are thriving in Guatemala, drawing blame for a wave of murders and other crimes that grip its shantytowns, and even its prisons. Guatemalan authorities have made little headway against gang activity in a nation struggling to overcome a culture of violence and lawlessness that took root during a 36-year civil war.
