"Dream: Eu so positivo (I'm positive)"

1 of 10

Mozambique. Beira: Chingussura district. Benjamin (9) lost his family when he was a baby and went to live with his grandmother and cousins. He is HIV positive and is receiving treatment. Actually he is also under chemotherapy for a Kaposi Sarcoma. His dream is to become a teacher; he would like to help people and his grandmother.

Summary: HIV positive patients, apparently in good health, who are receiving an antiretroviral treatment. They are the fortunate of the 12,000 HIV positive that are presently under treatment in Mozambique of a population of about twenty million inhabitants with a contagious rate that in some areas hovers around 30 per cent. To be precise they are patients in the DREAM project (Drug Resources Enhancement against AIDS and Malnutrition). Paradoxically, people that are able to continue to live find it difficult to survive because of economic problems in this country. Of all those represented, I asked what would be their dream for the future. The response of 90% of them was: a decent house, a job guaranteeing good health, and education for their children. Often the impression was that the value of life was secondary in respect to the primary needs often denied or not guaranteed to the majority of Mozambicans.
