"Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa"

1 of 12

"xenophobic attacks in south africa" In May 2008, South Africa was shocked by sudden and very brutal violence that erupted in the townships around the country. Foreigners, mainly from neighbouring African states, like Zimbabwe and Mozambique, were blamed for stealing jobs, houses and even women from South Africans. Many say the violence was an angry reaction to a lack of service delivery, by the government, as poverty and joblessness remain rife.

Here a mob gathers in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, when the first attacks took place. They would spread quickly to other Johannesburg townships and then across the country. May 2008.
