This story looks at both the majesty of migration and the threats caused by man. The spectacle of animal migrations, especially when the species moves in huge numbers, is both ancient and epic. Yet obstacles abound. Border walls, wire fencing and roads make it hard for species to move on the ground. The spinning blades of turbines take birds and bats from the sky. In the end, migratory routes and the species using them can be saved, but it will take years of careful planning by people who care.

Once North America's greatest wildlife spectacle, the bison on South Dakota's Triple U Ranch now roam just 18 miles a year. Once ranging freely throughout the Great Plains, bison today are confined to private ranches, federal parks and preserves.
