"ARAB REVOLUTION"

Throughout much of North Africa and the Middle East, 2011 was a year of popular uprising in what has become known as the Arab Spring. Each country's revolution, however, have followed different paths. In Egypt, President Hosni Mubarak was swept from power in only 18 days of mostly peaceful protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square. In Bahrain, the Sunni Monarchi crushed an opposition movement led by the country's Shia majority. In Libya, Mohamar Ghadafi was overthrown after 6 months of heavy fighting with a rebel force that was mostly made up of civilians and former government soldiers. While each country has followed very different paths in the last year, they have one thing in common; their revolutions are yet unfinished and the final outcomes are far from certain.

In Egypt women have taken visible roles in the "Arab Spring" revolution and have suffered a high price. Sexual molestation at the hands of security forces has become increasingly common.
