"Last of the Viking Whalers"

Norwegians have been hunting whale for thousands of years. Now there are only 17 whale boats remaining and the communities existence is being threatened as people leave to search for new lives

Hunting Minke whale on the Jan Bjorn in Lodingen, Lofoten, Norway. Whaling in Norway continues despite an international ban. Norway has a quota of 1286 whales per year, but rarely do the boats kill more than 500 as they simply can not find a demand for the meat. There used to be over 1000 whale boats in Norway but now only 17 remain. Communities which used to rely on this way of life are now shrinking as people leave the remote hamlets to find alternative careers.
