French soldiers patrolling Bangui, the restive capital of the Central African Republic, make their way through destroyed Muslim homes and businesses after their hearing sporadic gunfire in the area. Thousands of Muslims have been forced to flee the captial due to pressure from the mostly Christian "anti-balaka" militias. C.A.R. plunged into anarchy more than a year ago. Civil society began to erode when a Muslim-backed rebel force brutally took control of the country in 2013. By early 2014, a mostly Christian-backed force known as the “anti-balaka” began widespread revenge attacks. They toppled the Muslim-run “Selaka” government and began methodically ridding the country of its Muslim minority.
