"Care Institution, Kulina Yugoslavia"

1 of 10

Kulina's institution is a place of supposed care. Founded in 1957, it is the biggest institution for mental care in the nation, with the worst living conditions. It is located 250 kilometers southeast of Belgrade, north of Nis. The institution is built at the foot of the mountain, frequently inaccessible during the winter months, and its six wings accommodate 650 people, all moderately mentally challenged. The role of the institution is multifold as it gathers primarily kids with a variety of needs, from three months old until the end of their lives. Many of the children are permanently abandoned by their parents, while others are orphans. The mortality rate reaches 10 percent annually.
