A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency contractor dons personal protection equipment, before taking x-ray florescent readings of the soil at the former Master Metals lead smelter site in northeast Detroit, Michigan. To protect themselves from the hazards of lead and other chemicals at the site, workers wear gas masks, helmets, eye protection, boots, full-body disposable suits and latex gloves.
