"Racing to solve the riddle of the melting Arctic"
Conquering summer-time floes, the ice breaker Louis S. St. Laurent powers
through the Canada Basin on a research mission. Below the ice, a dynamic
Arctic Ocean-hit by climate change and lengthening seasons of ice thaw-keeps
records of past and present that may help scientists predict the future.
The Arctic is melting at an alarming rate. Some scientists
say that the Arctic could be void of ice by the
year 2050. This could mean the end of seals, polar bears and other wildlife
that depend on this cold platform to survive. Furthermore, sovereignty issues
will arise with increased ship traffic between the East and West. This story
was about a group of 50 scientists whowere/are racing to try and help solve
the mystery as to why the Arctic is melting at such an accelerated rate.
