4 of 12

"Hero" Frank Bauss, 14, who has 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 81% of his body is treated at Policlinico Hospital in Riobamba, Ecuador, Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006. Frank was burned by volcanic gas while trying to escape the eruption of Tungurahua, an active volcano, and save his grandmother, Carmelina Merino, who just recently died. The Ecuadorian government was slow to help the family, whose medical expenses are over $15,000 every 5 days, but is now paying for the ambulance flight. Frank is currently on his way to Boston for medical care and eventually reconstructive surgery.
