"The New Americans:
Island of Assimilation"

4 of 10

"A LAUGHING MATTER"
Becoming Americans, the Bosnians in the neighborhood they call, "Bosnian Square," are living in the middle of a mostly Hispanic neighborhood, in the ever changing South End of Hartford. On a perfect day late in the fall, Edis, or "little man," as they call him, laughs uncontrollably at a Puerto Rican boys antics as he jumps from a near by roof then to a tree limb and finally onto a pile of leaves the boys had gathered. Visit the square any day, and you'll find an atmosphere of childhood joy that permeates the environment. Though these new immigrants live in one of the oldest neighborhoods in one of America's poorest cities, the Bosnians, particularly the children have regained their lost youth.
