"The New Americans:
Island of Assimilation"

8 of 10

"BABY HANDOFF" Literally handing off his son Irmel, a spry one-year-old, Hazim Huric heads off to work, knowing his boy is in the good hands of his mother Rahima Huric, during the usually hectic hand off hour between four and six o'clock, six days a week. Bosnian immigrants fill most of the apartments in the "square," and many of the families work two jobs or hand off children as they go from one job to the next. Grand parents perform an incredibly important function among these immigrants, as grandmothers take care of children as adults work. They also do the bulk of cleaning and laundry.
